Connecting Minn Kota Fortrex Sonar Trolling Motors to Lowrance MFDs

Minn Kota Fortrex Trolling Motors + Lowrance MFDs: What You Need to Know

Minn Kota’s Fortrex series trolling motors are renowned for their durability and performance. Many models come equipped with built-in sonar transducers — either Universal Sonar 2 (US2) or Dual Spectrum CHIRP (DSC).

If you're using a Lowrance multi-function display (MFD) and want to integrate your Fortrex motor’s sonar, this guide will help you understand compatibility and setup.

🧭 Which Sonar Does Your Fortrex Have?

1. Universal Sonar 2 (US2)

  • Found in many Fortrex models

  • Transmits 83/200kHz 2D sonar

  • Built-in temperature sensor

  • Compatible with major fishfinder brands

2. Dual Spectrum CHIRP (DSC)

  • Found in newer Fortrex models

  • Delivers CHIRP-style 2D sonar (wide/narrow beam)

  • Optimized for Humminbird, but usable with others

Check your motor’s product listing or head label to confirm which sonar your Fortrex has.

🔌 Lowrance Compatibility and Required Adapter Cables

Both US2 and DSC-equipped Fortrex models can be used with Lowrance MFDs, but you’ll need the correct Minn Kota adapter cable.

✅ For Fortrex with US2:

  • MKR-US2-10 – For Lowrance 7-pin (blue connector)

  • MKR-US2-16 – For Lowrance 9-pin (Elite Ti2 & HDS)

✅ For Fortrex with DSC:

  • MKR-DSC-10 – Lowrance 7-pin

  • MKR-DSC-15 – Lowrance 8-pin

  • MKR-DSC-16 – Lowrance 9-pin (HDS Live, Elite FS, Elite Ti)

You can find these adapters on BLDMarine.com or contact our support team to confirm compatibility.

🛠️ Setup Instructions for Lowrance Displays

  1. Connect the Adapter Cable
Choose the correct MKR cable and connect it from your trolling motor’s transducer plug to the Lowrance MFD transducer port.

  2. Configure the MFD Settings

    • For US2 models, select a generic 83/200kHz transducer.

    • For DSC models, also select 83/200kHz (Lowrance interprets it as standard 2D sonar).

  3. Verify Temperature & Depth
Most Fortrex transducers include temperature sensing — this will display on your Lowrance interface once connected.

  4. Water Test
Run your setup on the water to confirm you’re getting real-time sonar readings and bottom tracking.

⚠️ What Features Are Supported?

Feature US2 Fortrex DSC Fortrex
2D Sonar
Temperature Reading
CHIRP (optimized) ✅ (limited)
Side Imaging / Down Imaging

Note: Neither US2 nor DSC transducers support Side Imaging or Down Imaging — those require additional transducers mounted at the transom or on a separate pole.
